Many companies that sell HP equipment describe themselves as HP managed print services providers. That label covers a wide range of vendor relationships. Some are certified partners with direct access to HP’s full managed print program and its managed-class device portfolio. Others handle the initial sale and then transfer the service relationship to an HP representative or a third-party technician network, leaving the buyer without a dedicated local contact once the contract is signed.
The pass-through model is more common than buyers expect, and it creates a real gap in accountability. When something goes wrong mid-contract or when the fleet needs to be reconfigured, customers in a pass-through arrangement often find that the company they bought from is no longer the one responsible for fixing it.
This distinction also runs directly through what equipment a buyer can actually access. HP Managed Devices are only available through certified HP managed print partners. They cannot be purchased through retail stores, HP’s website, or uncertified vendors. For any organization hoping to access those devices and the program advantages that come with them, vendor certification is the only path in.
